The City of Austin Neighborhood Planning and Zoning Department is seeking a creative and highly motivated Urban Design professional to join a team of planning and design professionals working on a variety of exciting and complex initiatives. Examples include planning and design of streetscape and related public realm projects, capital improvement projects, transit station area plans, neighborhood, corridor, and district plans and design-related code amendments. As part of the Urban Design Section, this design professional will help to inform City projects, policies and practices with an urban design perspective.
Examples of duties include: Serve as the city’s lead design staff on various projects and programs;
Project management of key public planning and design initiatives;
Coordination of other planning and urban design related activities including making presentations to the City Council, City Manager’s Office, City boards and commissions and the public.
The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, planning, public administration, geography or related field, plus seven (7) years of relevant experience.
OR
Master’s Degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, planning, public administration, geography or related field, plus five (5) years of relevant experience.
Special consideration will be given to candidates with:
A degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design
Ability to contribute significantly to production of presentation-quality graphics using standard computer graphic applications and manual drawing techniques;
Ability to work well/collaborate with members of the public, consultants, other City staff;
Excellent graphic, verbal, written and communication skills.
Project design and project management experience on streetscape and/or public space projects;
Professional experience in a variety of planning and design projects ranging in both scale and type;
Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and 3D modeling programs.
